How to Mount a Handrail in a Stairway
- 1). Measure up 33 inches from every stair on the wall. Most city codes require handrails to be between 32 and 34 inches off the ground. Make a dot at 33 inches up the wall from every stair.
- 2). Have a friend hold one end of the chalk string at the top of the stairs while you hold the other end at the bottom of the stairs. Flick the string to leave a line that is in line with all the dots you marked up from every stair.
- 3). Run the stud finder just above the chalk line. Mark the chalk line at each point where the stud finder beeps. Find the three studs closest to the top, middle, and bottom of stairway (one at each location).
- 4). Hold the handrail up to the wall so it is in line with the chalk line. Mark the handrail with the location of the top, middle, and bottom studs.
- 5). Screw the handrail mounts to the back of the handrail at the three stud locations you marked. Have a friend hold the handrail up to the chalk line. The mounts will extend below the handrail for drilling and mounting convenience. Drill pilot holes through each of the three mounts with the 7/64 drill bit.
- 6). Screw all the wood screws into the pilot holes. Wipe any chalk or pencil marks off the wall with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
