Listening to the litany of woes associated with teaching, many wonder why it remains a profession of choice for so many.
Each teacher has her own, very personal reasons.
Here are mine.
Satisfaction of Having an Important Job The job description of a teacher runs as follows: Overworked, Underpaid, No Promotions.
Only two other jobs have the same profile: God and Mother.
Therefore teaching must be a very important job.
An Escape Route in Boring Parties During boring adult parties, a teacher can legitimately hang around with her students and ex-students in the children's corner, the zone with free-flowing cartoons and ice-cream.
Getting a New Perspective on Morals I was teasing a five-year old student that ants were liable to carry him off unless he washed his sticky fingers.
He promptly turned around and scolded me gravely, "If you tell lies, your nose will grow long.
Then birds will sit on it and do potty on your face.
" It's hard to think of a better reason to remain truthful.
Learning about Clean, Clear and Quick Justice Me: Why did you hit him? Student: "He hit me first.
" Me: "But don't you think you should have let me deal with it instead?" Student:(emphatically) "NO.
You wouldn't have hit him.
You would only have scolded him.
" I can't remember how I wriggled out of that one! Understanding the Irrelevance of Right and Wrong Me: "How many muffins?" Student: (3-year-old) "10 Muffins.
" Me: "Look at me count - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
5 Muffins.
So, whose answer is right? Student:Mine.
Because 10 muffins are better than 5 muffins.
But, of course!! There are more important things in life than a correct answer.
Muffins, for one.
Learning all about out of the box thinking A sample of the stuff I've come across in answer sheets.
"A seed grows into a baby pant.
" "Q: How do you know that John was a kind boy? A: Because I've read the lesson twice.
" "He lost all his money and became bankraped.
" "A crowd is a large grope.
" "A screw is better than a nail because it is easier to screw than to nail.
" The Fun Factor Last, but not the least - the fun factor.
Children can be exasperating, frustrating, tiring but never, ever boring.
And for all the drawbacks, it is still a privilege and honour to be in a profession where you spend your time in the company of angels.
