Marine Basic Training Description
- Marine Corps basic training is a 12-week course, preceded by a week of processing and receiving. Each phase lasts 4 weeks. All phases emphasize physical conditioning and the Marine Corps' core values.
- Marine Corps recruit training takes place at one of two places: Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, and Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina. Recruits from east of the Mississippi usually train at Parris Island, while recruits from west of the Mississippi train in San Diego. All female recruits receive basic training at Parris Island.
- The first phase of basic training includes physical condition, the Marine Corps' martial arts program, unarmed combat training, Marine Corps history and first aid. Phase one ends with swim training. The second phase includes more physical conditioning, as well as qualification on the rifle range.
- The third phase of training includes a unit exercise known as the Crucible. This is a 54-hour exercise that involves long marches, a series of problem-solving tasks and only a few hours of sleep. This is final major exercise before recruit graduation.
- A rigorous exercise regimen to prepare for basic training is advisable. Concentrate on running, long marches (up to 10 miles), push-ups and pull-ups. Physical training is a daily part of Marine Corps basic training.
