How do I Replace a Bathroom Sink Drain Trap?
- 1). Clean out the area underneath the bathroom sink. Remove any cleaners, supplies or towels that might be stored there to give yourself more room to work.
- 2). Place the bucket underneath the P-trap, the curved portion at the bottom of the sink.
- 3). Loosen the couplings at either end of the trap. Use a pair of channel lock pliers (metal pipes) or your hands (PVC).
- 4). Pull the P-trap out of the plumbing. Empty the water inside into the bucket.
- 5). Clean off the threads on the tail piece and the sewer inlet pipe with steel wool. Remove any traces of old caulk or tape. Wrap the threads with plumber's tape, pulling tightly to stretch it across the threads. Make at least two wraps around the tape. Trim off any excess.
- 6). Insert the new P-trap in place between the tail piece and sewer inlet. Tighten the coupling with either your hands or pliers.
