EXPERT TIPS ON SUMMER WEATHER PROOFING

105 1
Weather proofing is one of the best ways to make the summer heat more bearable. There are many methods to achieve weather proofing, but it takes an expert to get to the root of the problem and give the most efficient and cost effective solution. This is where you want to trust experts, such as Bullfrog Builders.

Dino Andreakos, the Bullfrog Builders owner and their leading expert on weatherproofing, has sent his arrow of expertise into the heart of the solution. "Weatherproofing can save you a lot of money,". Dino notes, and he also points out that "A well insulated house is the key to saving energy." By having efficient weather proofing, the cost involved will be offset by lower energy bills, and in due course, the savings will be greater than the cost. An added advantage is that such maintenance adds to the life of the building, and last but not least, saving energy is environmentally friendly. Weatherproofing done by experts, such as Bullfrog Builders, can save you money and make summer a time to look forward to.

Dino's tips on weather proofing the house for summer are:

Check your home for air leakages:

Give your entire house a thorough once over, noting any holes and cracks you find. Take a flashlight and check the gaps of doors, windows, air vents, etc. Remember that even innocuous items such as electrical sockets and plugs could leak air, and don't forget to check the roof, pipes and walls too. You can use a small fan as an aid: just use the fan to blow air from one side of a possible leak, and see if there is any leakage of air on the other side. Once you have mapped out all of the weak points, it is time to fix the problem.

Insulation:

Since heating and cooling account for about three quarters of the cost of energy, this is the first aspect that needs attention. Insulation is the key to preventing cold air-conditioned air from escaping. By insulating the right areas, you will save a veritable 'pot of gold' over time.

Depending on the location and size of the hole, gap or crack, you can use a variety of insulation methods to plug the leak.

Fiberglass - you can use fiberglass insulation between walls to reduce heat inside the house.

Spray Insulation - this can be used to plug small holes.

Plastic Sheeting - use strips of plastic sheeting and double-sided tape to form a seal around your window. Make sure you remove all the dust and grime from the window by washing with warm soapy water; otherwise the double-sided tape will not stick well.

Caulking - using a caulking gun, apply caulk around the edges of the window to form a complete seal.

Weather Stripping - Buy weather stripping of various widths. Cut into required lengths. Peel off the stripping and line all the door frames, windows etc. to form an effective seal.
