    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a sales manager is an employee responsible for overseeing and conducting the sales program at a company.

    Responsibilities

    • Sales managers are supervisors. They provide assistance to sales representatives (in the form of training and advice), analyze sales statistics for the company, set sales objectives and monitor the progress of sales representatives.

    Pay

    • The median wage for sales managers was $97,260 in May 2008. The bottom 10 percent made $47,010, while the top 25 percent made more than $141,270. (See Reference 2)

    Experience

    • Many sales managers are former sales representatives who were promoted. These employees are trained on the job. About 38 percent of sales representatives have a bachelor's degree, 19 percent have some college training and 27 percent only have a high school diploma.

    Outlook

    • The outlook for sales managers is average. Employment is expected to grow by 12% through the year 2016.
