Are You Overqualified?

103 32
Recently, a friend mentioned that during an interview, a company told him that he was "Over-Qualified" for a role that he was very interested in.
Has this ever happened to you? If so, what was your reaction? What did you say in response? In this economy, my guess is the majority of applicants applying for positions are going to be "Over-Qualified".
With a scarcity of jobs, high unemployment, today's job-seeker is looking for anything to stick.
You hear stories everyday about the MBA guy working at Walmart.
I say - GOOD For Walmart, and can appreciate them for loading up on talent while the pickings are great! For the questioning company who is judging your over-qualification.
To me, it is either a test question that is waiting for a great response from you.
Or its the flip-side, the company may NOT be the place you want to work if they are hesitant on bringing in expertise.
To respond to the over-qualified question, many times you sought them for a specific reason.
This is where you need to state your passion for why you feel you are the right choice and use your experience, education and skillset to your advantage.
Explain why you are the perfect candidate for the role today, in 3 years and 10 years down the road.
Having a results-oriented vision is a key skillset over-qualified candidates can perfect.
Think of this scenario.
You play on a local softball team, and you were seeking an extra player.
A friend mentioned that he could get a buddy to play, but was not sure how good he was.
At the same time, another friend told you that a former Minor Leaguer player was looking to get on a team as well.
Who would you pick? If any lesson is learned and the over-qualified comment comes up, take it as a compliment and use it to your advantage.
Why wouldn't a company want the best performers? Do not let the conversation turn to "would you get bored in the role".
You have interest in the job, don't let a key question that is in your favor prohibit you from getting your job!
