The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established in 1925 to support scholars and artists in the Western hemisphere.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awards Fellowships to mid-career visual artists which allows the selected Fellows a period of 6 to 12 months in which to create new works of art. History:
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established in 1925 by former United States Senator and Mrs. Simon Guggenheim, in memory of their seventeen-year-old son John Simon Guggenheim,
The first Fellowship awards were granted to United States citizens and were originally titled the “John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study Abroad.”
The first year of the awards in 1926 were granted to fifteen Fellows who were required to travel abroad.
However, by 1941, that requirement was rescinded.
In 1940, Canadian citizens were eligible to apply for the Fellowships.
The award was then expanded to include Latin America and the Caribbean, and over 1,800 Fellowships have been awarded in this category.
Selection Process
The selection process is rigorous and thorough, as this is a highly competitive award.
Every application is read by a committee of experts. Former Guggenheim Fellows work as advisers to the Foundation; they review applications and submit reports critiquing and ranking the applications.
The advisers' reports are then sent to a Committee of Selection who will determine how many awards to give out and submit their recommendations to the Board of Trustees for final approval.

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation provides two annual competitions for its Fellowships:
- United States and Canada: citizens and permanent residents.
