How to Find a New Attorney

104 7
    • 1). Ask friends, family members or business acquaintances for a recommendation. Tell them what type of legal services you need -- such as real estate or personal injury -- so they will know what type of attorney you are seeking.

    • 2). Visit your local library and look in the latest edition of the "Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory" to find information about the names and backgrounds of attorneys who offer the type of legal services you need. In addition, you can also find out peer ratings regarding ethics and competency.

    • 3). Visit a site such as the American Bar Association or Nolo's Lawyer Directory to find resources for attorney referrals in your state.

    • 4). Make an appointment for a consultation with an attorney who has your required qualifications. Be aware of things such as if she's prompt, organized, attentive and helpful. If you don't feel comfortable or confident with the attorney, move on to another candidate and keep doing so until you find the attorney that you feel is right for the task.
