Proper Font for Resumes
- Computer font is an individual's electronic handwriting. In daily life, people use fonts they believe are pretty, fun or functional; however, resumes are professional business documents, so it is important that the font used on a resume looks professional and is not distracting or difficult to read.
- Wellesley College says the ideal readability font size for a resume is 10, 11 or 12. Conventional fonts, such as Arial, Times New Roman and Palatino, are recommended. Frilly, bubbly or cartoonish fonts are not received positively by employers, as they make the resume look unprofessional, and the applicant comes across as immature. To call attention to certain sections of the resume, fonts can be italicized, bold or underlined.
- According to Wellesley College, employers spend an average of 20 to 30 seconds scanning a resume to determine if they are interested. As such, if employers receive fonts that are illegible, the resume will most likely end up in the trash.
