How to Decrease Canister Filter Flow Rate

104 29
    • 1). Cut the existing PVC pipe that connects the canister filter to the outlet port that is connected to the fish tank. Use a coping saw and cut a straight line at a 90 degree angle through the pipe. If the cut is not straight, you'll need to straighten it with the coping saw by cutting more material off of each side of the cut ends.

    • 2). Deburr the cut ends of the pipe with 600 grit sand paper. This should be completed on the outside and inside of the pipe. Wipe clean with a dry cloth, making sure that the inside of the pipe is free of all debris before moving on. This will prevent any plastic from damaging the canister's pump.

    • 3). Connect both of the existing pipes ends to the Quarter-bloc ball valve using the SCH80 end connectors supplied with the ball valve. Tighten only with your hands. Do not use a pipe wrench to tighten. The ball valve is "directional," which means the water is designed to flow in one direction. The ball valve will denote which end should lead to the canister.

    • 4). Open the valve to allow for full force and turn the canister filter on. Slowly restrict the flow until desired flow is achieved.
