Naracoorte Caves

106 1

Close to the Victorian border in the southeast corner of South Australia, Naracoorte Caves National Park is part of the World Heritage site comprising two non-contiguous Australian fossil mammal sites. The Naracoorte site is in South Australia, and the other in Riversleigh, Queensland, more than 2000 kilometres away.

The 305-hectare Naracoorte site includes the caves and the series of stranded coastal dune ridges parallel to the present South Australian coastline.

The Australian fossil mammal sites were inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1994 as outstanding examples representing major stages of the earth's evolutionary history, and as outstanding examples representing significant ongoing ecological and biological evolution.

Popular attraction

The Naracoorte Caves have become a popular attraction due to visitor opportunities to explore the subterranean wonders and, for those so inclined, to discover evidences of life in the Pleistocene Age and the development of Earth itself.

There are 26 caves in the national park, but not all are open to visitors. Some of the caves are set aside for scientific research or for protection of the cave and its contents. The caves open to the public provide a variety of opportunities for regular show cave tours through to long adventure caving tours.

Naracoorte lies in the southeastern section of South Australia and is part of what is known as the Limestone Coast. Close to the Victorian border, the caves are about 80 kilometres from Mt Gambier on the Princes Highway.

Mt Gambier is 486 kilometres from the state capital, Adelaide, but there are shorter routes to the caves through Kingston SE on the Princes Highway or through Bordertown on the Dukes Highway.

Southeast of town

The Naracoorte Caves Conservation Park is 12 kilometres southeast of Naracoorte town. The popular show caves include the Victoria Fossil Cave with its Pleistocene fossil deposits, Alexandra Cave, Cathedral Cave, Blanche Cave, and Wet Cave.

You can go on a self-guided tour through Wet Cave. For the others, you would need to join a guided tour.

Adventure tours through some of the undeveloped caves are available for novices and advanced cavers.
