104 33

    History

    • The New Mexico Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics records and houses original copies of death certificates. The bureau has collected data in the state since 1919. The state houses records from as far back as 1880 in limited cases. Physicians, hospitals, funeral directors, the Office of the Medical Investigator and tribal authorities report information about deaths to the bureau.

    Access

    • The State of New Mexico restricts access to death certificates to immediate family including parents, siblings, children, a current spouse and maternal and paternal grandparents. A person who is not an immediate family member must present proof that they have a legal interest in the death certificate.

    Requests

    • You may request a certified copy of a New Mexico death certificate by visiting the office of vital records in Santa Fe in person or request it by mail or Internet. In 2010, each certified copy costs $5. By mail or Internet, you may pay additional fees for processing and shipping.
