Sinus Drainage Procedures

    Medication

    • One remedy that works very well for sinus drainage is by taking a nasal decongestant. The medicine in a decongestant works by constricting the blood vessels in the sinuses so that the fluid and mucus drain out. It will also dry out your mouth and sinuses, so drink some water if your throat becomes excessively dry. Nasal decongestants come in pill form that you can buy at your local drugstore for less than $10. The disadvantage to using a decongestant is that they can sometimes cause headaches and sore throats.

    Steam

    • Steam will help drain a clogged sinus. You can take a hot shower and inhale the steam and your sinuses should start to drain. The only problem with using steam to drain your sinuses is that as soon as you get out of the shower, your sinuses may start to inflame again.

    Food

    • Eating spicy foods will drain your sinuses very quickly. Chili, cayenne pepper, and strong spices work best. The spicier the food, the more your nose will run and the faster your sinuses will drain. Spicy foods work similarly to nasal decongestants in that they constrict blood vessels in the face. The disadvantage to this technique is that when you stop eating the spicy food, the sinuses sometimes fill back up with fluid if the inflammatory cause is not eliminated.

    Infection

    • You can tell if you have a sinus infection by looking at the color of your mucus. Infected mucus is a deep yellow or light green color and it means that it is full of dead white blood cells. The mucus will be very thick and plentiful during an infection. The best way to drain your sinuses in this case is to see a doctor who will prescribe you antibiotics like amoxicillin. The infection should go away in about 10 days, but be sure to finish the entire bottle. You should only take antibiotics if you definitely have an infection, otherwise it will do nothing for the sinuses and may even encourage antibiotic-resistant bacteria to form.
