Troubleshooting Network Printers in Windows XP
- 1). Walk over to the network printer and print a test page. The exact procedure for printing a test page varies from printer to printer, so be sure to consult the printer's manual for instructions.
- 2). Examine the test page and find the network section. Look for the Internet protocol address of the printer. The IP address consists of four numbers, each separated by a period, such as. 10.78.25.180.
- 3). Go to your XP computer and click on the "Start" button. Choose "Run" from the menu and type "CMD" in the box.
- 4). Type the "ping" command, followed by the IP address from the printer, (i.e., "ping 10.78.25.180"). You should receive four lines with a positive response from the IP address.
- 5). Remove and reseat the network cable that runs between the wall outlet and the printer. A badly seated network cable can disrupt communication and cause network print jobs to fail.
- 6). Turn off the network printer and remove the network card. Reseat the network card by pushing it in until it stops and then securing it with thumbscrews. If the printer is still not communicating with the network, the network card should be replaced.
