What Type of Gas Do You Use in a Super Charger Motor?
- You can use commercial grade gas in your supercharged motor in some circumstances. If your boost levels are low enough, or at stock levels, 91 or 93 octane fuel will suffice in the motor to prevent engine detonation. High boost levels will cause knocking and other erratic engine behavior with pump gas.
- Mixing a fuel additive that increases the octane of your pump gas is suitable for supercharged engines. The additive acts as insurance against knocking and cylinder detonation by increasing the combustion rating of the fuel.
- Lead-based or high-octane race fuel is needed if you have a high horsepower motor for your vehicle. Lead fuels produce a dense fuel mixture that can withstand the high air pressures created with forced induction. Lead fuel is usually available only at race tracks for a price much higher than pump gas.
