How to Compare GPS for a Vehicle

    • 1). Compare ease of use. If possible, ask to test the product. Try to locate an address, set a route and find your way back home from the store. Use the additional features such as sound settings and screen brightness controls to see how easy the system is to customize.

    • 2). Analyze and compare the features of each model. Look for models that have voice command capability. This allows you to set directions hands free. Other features to compare include the ability to store favorite locations, search for locations by name or category, such as restaurants and shopping, and download updated maps.

    • 3). Compare the speed of the model. Enter a route into the GPS and see how long it takes to calculate a route. Do this simultaneously for the same route on different GPS models for a basic comparison. Try two or three different routes to different states and locally for a more rounded comparison.

    • 4). Compare the map accuracy. Look on the map for the location of new roads, highway exits and other recent changes, such as new buildings and developments, that may not be included on the maps. Updated models should have them in their map.

    • 5). Compare device storage. Some models offer up to 500 MB or more of capacity with maps from all over the world available for download. If you are a frequent, long-distance traveler, this is important. If you stay in your own state, this may not be such an important feature.
