History of the Hula Hoop

A hula hoop is a round hoop that is twirled around the waist and limbs for exercise or fun.
It is an ancient invention and the Greeks used them as a form of exercise.
Older hoops have been made from wood, bamboo, metal and vines, but the modern ones are usually made from plastic.
They often have added bits of glitter or things which make a noise as they revolve.
Hooping came to Britain around 1300 using homemade hoops.
In the 1800s british sailors witnessed hula dancing in the Hawaiian Islands, and as this looked similar to hooping, the name "hula hoop" originated.
A company called Wham-O has become the most successful manufacturer of hula hoops in modern times.
They trademarked the name Hula Hoop and started making it out of the new plastic Marlex in 1958, and 20 million of their hoops sold at $1.

The average price sold today is about $2, so in 50 years, the price has not changed, but relatively speaking, it has gone down, as the value of mone yhas changed a lot in 50 years.
As a young schoolgirl, I had one of these plastic hula hoops, and there was great competition between myself and friends to see who could keep it swirling around our waists the longest.
Now, I can't manage more than a few twirls.
The craze died out in the 1960s, but has now made a comeback, and people are rushing to buy them again.
This is good, as it will help to keep our young people fit and active.
Trivia facts Japan once banned the hula hoop because the rotating hip action seemed indecent.
105 hoops were spun by Jin Linlin of China on October 28th 2007 The duration record for hula hooping is held by Roxann Rose of the USA who went 90 hours between April 2nd and April 6th 1987
