DIY Grow Bags

Open-top bags

• 1). Choose a bag size to fit the type and number of plants you plan to grow. Make sure the bag is heavy enough to withstand the weight of potting soil. Place one bag inside another for extra stability if necessary.
  
  
• 2). Set the bag where you intend to grow the plants, particularly if the bag is large and will be heavy once filled with soil and plants. Place a piece of cardboard under the bag to help slide it if you wish to move it after filling and planting.
  
  
• 3). Fill the bag to within a few inches of the top. Spread the soil as you work, so the bag is filled solidly from side to side. Tuck the leftover edges of plastic toward the inside of the bag in the soil.
  
  
• 4). Plant seeds or plant sets in the soil. Follow the seed or plant package suggestions on how far apart and how deep to plant each item.
  
  

Hanging Grow Bags

• 1). Decide where and how you wish to hang a bag before choosing the size and shape of a bag. Choose a long, thin rectangular bag for an oblong hanging bag effect. Consider smaller bags that will be lighter when filled for most hanging plants.
  
  
• 2). Cut slits in the bag after filling it with soil. Place slits where you wish to have a plant growing on the outside of the bag.
  
  
• 3). Place seeds or plant sets into the soil inside each slit in the bag. Push them firmly downward toward the inside of the plastic to provide a better hold when the plants grow.
  
  
• 4). Hang a planted bag on a nail or hook. Place a bag inside a macrame hanger, if desired.
