How to Winterize Roses Uusing the Minnesota Tip Method

    • 1). Make sure the ground is moist and workable. If there isn't adequate rain, water the roses well for two or three days before you plan to tip them.

    • 2). Use twine to tie the rose canes together to make them more compact and easier to handle.

    • 3). With the shovel, dig a trench starting at the base of the rose bush and going out as far as the bush is high. The trench should be as deep as the tied-up rose bush is wide.

    • 4). Loosen the soil around the rose bush with a spading fork. Be careful not to sever or damage any major roots.

    • 5). At this point, you may apply lime-sulfur spray or another fungicide to prevent fungal growth and protect the rose bush during dormancy. Always follow the instructions carefully and use caution when applying chemicals.

    • 6). Gently tip the rose bush into the trench you have dug. Don't worry if some of the roots loosen themselves from the ground. This is normal.

    • 7). Bury the entire rose bush with at least three to four inches of soil, and heap at least eighteen inches of mulch, such as leaves or straw, over the mound.

    • 8). Mark the spot with a stake or flag so that you can easily find it again in the spring.

    • 9). Wait until the ground is thawed in the spring to begin raising your roses. Remove the mulch around April 1, and by April 15 you may gently lift the roses out of the trench with a spading fork. Remove the twine, replant the rose bush and water it well.
