How to Shop for Window Treatments
- 1). Get a measuring tape and measure your windows. Start from 2 inches outside the window frame on the left to 2 inches outside the window frame on the right to get your width. This 2-inch space will be your allowance for curtain rod installation. Dependent on your tastes, determine if you want long curtains or short ones. If you want long curtains, you should measure from the top of the window pane down to the floor for length measurements. If you would like shorter curtains, there are two types of short curtains, A valance and a kitchen drape. A valance is a very short 8 to 10 inch wide curtain that only covers the top section of a window, a kitchen drape is usually the exact size of the window. If you want a shorter curtain, use your measurements from the pane to the sill to make your purchase. If you are measuring for blinds, always measure from the pane to the sill for length and from 2 inches outward on each side for the width.
- 2). Get on the computer and do a basic search for window treatments on your favorite search engine. Some great sites to visit are homedepot.com, bedbathandbeyond.com, and lowes.com. Each of these websites carry a wide selection of window treatments, including blinds, curtains and sheers. Write down any styles and colors you like and consider how you would like the mood of your room to be. If you want a light and airy mood, go for sheers, which are light fabric curtains made from voile. Sheers have a transparency and make small spaces appear larger. If you want a more formal mood, go for some heavy drapes. Drapes are long curtain panels, usually made from a heavy cotton fabric. Try layering sheers under drapes for a formal but light mood. Write down any styles and colors you find on-line that might suit the needs of your room.
- 3). Take a trip to one of the stores who carry the products you wrote down. Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond and Lowe's all have physical stores that carry most of the items they have online. If the online store you found does not have a physical store, you can go ahead and make your order with them as long as they have a good return policy. Though visiting a physical store with the products you like will give you a better feel of how the fabric and textures will work in your home.
- 4). Purchase the window treatments you liked according to the measurements you took. Remember to keep the receipt and packaging in case you made a mistake or do not like the treatments once you hang them. Also remember to purchase curtain rods, nails and a hammer so that you can properly install your window treatments.
