- Each room can have several levels of ambient lighting. Table lamps or wall sconces are sufficient for general lighting. Simple iron or rustic brass lamps can keep in line with your style. Torchieres aimed at the ceiling can create wonderful shadows on molding and fixtures. If this is too modern for you, consider lanterns. Candles add the final touch.
- No matter how dungeon-like you may want your home to look, you'll need good task lighting to provide sufficient illumination for everyday chores and work. Overhead lighting, such as a wrought-iron chandelier with electric fixtures, can make a sufficient task light to put over tables or in the center of your room. Install a dimmer so that you can control the brightness and convert it to ambient light whenever you desire.
- Natural light, while welcome in most home decor styles, should be subdued in a gothic or medieval home. Allow more natural light in when the sun is slanted in the early morning or late afternoon. Use heavy window treatments during the harshest part of the day to block sunlight.
