    • 1). Inspect your home for signs of discoloration, especially near damp areas such as showers and bath tubs.

    • 2). Place a drop of bleach on any discoloration you find. If it disappears, the discoloration is probably mold or mildew. If there is no change, the stain probably has a different cause, like minerals in the water or smoke from the air.

    • 3). Check for a musty or earthy smell, especially in dark, damp or poorly ventilated areas. A musty smell is often caused by fungal growth.

    • 4). Look for water leaks and damp areas. Fungi is likely to grow in areas of your house where there are moisture problems.

    • 5). Check ceilings and ceiling tiles for water stains, which indicate a leak. A leak that is left unrepaired can promote mold growth.

    • 6). Periodically check areas around your home where pipes run, such as under sinks, behind washing machines and the water supply for a refigerator's ice maker. A leak in these areas can go unnoticed for months, causing rotted wood and sheet rock, and providing the perfect conditions for fungus.
