    • 1). Look around your house and determine any sources of food that the ants are attracted to. Ants are, particularly, attracted to sweet, sugary items. Look for crumbs your children may have dropped on the ground, bottles, kids' sippy cups, soda cans, dog food, cat food or any other food that is near the ground. Clean up any messes and put dog or cat food in sealed tubs.

    • 2). Find the ants nest. Ants are very territorial and return to the same nest and use the same paths. Upon locating the nest, pour boiling water over the nest. Include some cayenne pepper in the water for maximum effect on killing the ants.

    • 3). Use one of the following materials to repel or kill the ants: instant grits, cinnamon, vinegar, salt, cayenne pepper, cream of tartar, citric extracts, perfume or bone meal. Use the material of your choice and place lines across entryways and in the areas where ants are located. If one material doesn't work, try another one. You need to find the material that the ants are repelled by and turn away. Using the instant grits will kill the ants. The ants eat the grits and the grits swell, resulting in the ants dying.

    • 4). Purchase ant pesticide at your local hardware store. This could come in the form of sprays, powder, pellets or traps. Use the pesticide according to the instructions but take precautions to keep the pesticides out of reach of children and pets.
