How to Calculate Gravitational Field
- 1). Choose the planetary body for which you wish to calculate the gravitational field. Then, multiply the mass of the planetary body by the mass of the object on which the gravitational field is acting. For example, the mass of Saturn is 5.68 x 10^26 kg (see Resources). If the object is a 500 kg rock, multiply 500 kg by 5.68 x 10^26 kg, which equals 2.84 --- 10^29 kg.
- 2). Multiply 2.84 --- 10^29 kg by the universal gravitational constant, which is 6.673 x 10^-11 power. In our example, you will get 1.895132 --- 10^19 kg.
- 3). Divide 1.895132 --- 10^-19 kg by the radius of the planetary body squared. (see Resources). The radius of Saturn is 5.85 x 10^7 meters. Multiply the radius by itself to obtain 3.42225 --- 10^15 meters squared. Finally, in our example, divide 1.895132 --- 10^-19 kg by 3.42225 --- 10^15 meters squared to obtain the gravitational field strength on the 500 kg rock, which is 5.53767843 --- 10^-35 Newton-inverse kg (Nkg^-1).
