Natural Remedies for the Common Cold During Pregnancy

    Herbs and Pregnancy

    • According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, very few studies have examined the effects of herbal remedies on an unborn child. Always talk to your doctor before trying anything. Even if studies are not around to support a remedy's benefits, your doctor's experience can guide you.

Natural or herbal products are not under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration and, therefore, are not held to the same standards as medicines or subjected to the same tests. Drug companies must submit to meticulous studies in order to get their medicines approved, so be aware of the risk that you are taking by choosing products that may not have been rigorously researched.

    Prevention is the Key

    • The best natural remedy for the common cold is no remedy at all; it is prevention. If you can avoid a cold while you are pregnant, then you won't have to worry about medications and remedies. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly to kill germs and to prevent the transfer of the cold virus to entry points on your face such as your mouth, nose and eyes. If you are around sick people, wear a mask or separate yourself. You are pregnant; they will understand. Stay hydrated with lots of fluids, get plenty of rest and avoid activities that weaken your immune system, such as extreme alcohol consumption and smoking (which is best for the baby anyway).

    Remedies to Try

    • If you feel a cold coming on, pump up your vitamin C intake. It won't cure you, but according to the National Institutes and Health and the U.S. National Library of Medicine, it may shorten the duration of your cold. You also can try garlic. Although garlic's antibacterial properties do not work on the common cold virus, garlic may help strengthen your overall immune system. For a sore throat, hot teas containing lemon and honey can soothe the pain. If you have a stuffy nose, a humidifier will moisten the air, loosen the congestion and make it easier to breathe.
