104 37

    Significance

    • Some people may not like to take cough medicines or drugs, and supplements provide a more natural way for alleviating chest congestion. Certain drugs may also cause serious side effects, according to WebMD. Natural supplements could be a safer alternative.

    Types of Supplements

    • Burdock, mullein and white pine are three supplements known to relieve chest congestion from allergies or colds. Capsicum, a pepper, can be used as an expectorant for relieving congestion and coughs.

    Other Types of Supplements

    • Eucalyptus is an herb that can help alleviate chest congestion. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, eucalyptus contains tannins, which are believed to reduce inflammation. Eucalyptus can be taken by mouth in pill form or under the tongue as a liquid.

    Effects of Oils

    • Certain oils, such as lavender and peppermint, can be rubbed on the chest or used in a vaporizer to relieve chest congestion. Eucalyptus also can be used in the same way. Spreading these on the chest and using them in a vaporizer could provide an effective way to clear mucus from the lungs.

    Warning

    • Some herbs should not be used if you have certain conditions. For example, a person with tuberculosis, lupus or multiple sclerosis should not use eucalyptus for chest congestion. Herbs can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and heart palpitations. Check with your doctor if you are not sure about taking a particular supplement.
