How to Activate an AGM Battery

    • 1). Remove the protective caps from the AGM battery terminals; one is usually red, indicating positive, the other blue or black, indicating negative. You will also find they are slightly different sizes; the positive cap is larger than the negative cap. Either pry them off using your fingers, or use a flat head screwdriver and slide the end under the lip of the cap. Twist the screwdriver slightly to loosen the cap.

    • 2). Attach a red cable clamp from a battery charger to the terminal that had the red cap fitted; the terminal is labeled "+."

    • 3). Attach a black cable clamp from the battery charger to the terminal that had the blue or black cap fitted; the terminal labeled "-."

    • 4). Turn on the smart battery charger. If possible, use a smart charger, as it optimizes the charge rate, making sure your battery gets the right charge and is charged for the correct time. Your AGM battery already contains a small charge, but you need to charge it for at least 8 hours; longer is better and a smart charger will do this for you.

    • 5). Leave the AGM battery to charge. Wait until the charge indicator light illuminates. This confirms charging has stopped and your battery is ready for use.

    • 6). Turn off the charger. Disconnect the two cable clamps from the battery terminals.
