ASSESSING THE RISKS

When dealing with overweight and obesity various health
risks are to be considered. A rising risk of morbidity from
hypertension; dyslipidemia; type 2 diabetes; stroke;
gallbladder issues; sleep apnea; and respiratory, and
colon cancers to mention a few. The National Heart, Lung
and Blood institution cooperation with a few other agencies
got together and released Federal guidelines on the
identification, evaluation and treatment of overweight and
obesity. With over 97 million adults in the United States
overweight and obese it is apparent we as a country have to
assist in addressing this issue. Resource, National Heart

One method in assessing your risk is through Body mass
index (BMI) Although it is a reliable indicator of body fat
it does have some limitations.

• With athletes and people with muscular builds can have
the body fat overestimated.

• The same holds true for older people and others who have
lost muscle mass.

However, for the most part what the BMI does do is measure
your height relative to weight. This coupled with waist
circumference can measure abdominal fat. Simply by using a
measuring tape around your waist can be a good indicator of
abdominal fat. Anything over 4 inches for men and 35 inches
for women can be and indicator if risk.

Utilizing the BMI table it is recommended if you have a BMI
greater or equal to 25 -30 and two or more risk factor.
(High blood pressure, high LDL (bad cholesterol), low
cholesterol (good cholesterol), high triglycerides, high
sugar, and a few others, weight loss is recommended. It
also recommended to see your doctor to make sure no other
issues are hidden by known risks.

As I mentioned before there is over 97 million Americans
overweight or obese. I feel we must band together and help
each other with this problem. Especially when it comes to
our children. I am sure you have heard or read in the news
not only of adults, but also our children are overweight.
Now, we can point the finger to many reasons, from
supersizing our meals to inactivity (playing video games)
and just plain convenience.

With all the information regarding weight loss programs and
exercising equipment, which one will work for us? One thing
that I realized for myself was what worked for me a few
years ago does not seem to work for me now. I used to hit
the gym and watch what I ate real close, now it is a
different way of life. I had to find a system that worked
for me and continue to work. I found one that seems top fit
the bill. A system to strip that fat, that causes the risk
factors.

My goal is to get the word out to as many people as I can
possibly reach to lose one pound at a time. Even if they do

ten percent of your current weight will help lower your
