Harvesting Pine Nuts

104 1
    • 1). Pick up any pine cones surrounding the pinon tree and place them into burlap bags.

    • 2). Lay old sheets or plastic tarps on the ground around the pinon tree. These will catch the cones as they fall.

    • 3). Place a tall ladder against the trunk of the tree.

    • 4). Climb the ladder and shake the branches of the tree to remove the cones from the limbs. Wearing heavy gloves to do this will help prevent scratches to your hands from the needles of the tree.

    • 5). Collect the fallen cones into burlap bags. Tie the bags closed.

    • 6). Set the bags, outside, in full sun to allow the cones to dry. Turn the bags over after a week.

    • 7). Toss the bag one or two times onto the ground. This will force the cones to release the nuts.

    • 8). Remove the cones from the burlap bags and place the nuts into a bowls for later eating as is or roasting.
