The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources oversees snowmobiling in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and operates a snowmobile hotline (877-766- 6253) with information on trail conditions statewide and proposed grooming campaigns. Updates are made every Tuesday and Friday throughout the season. Snowmobiling on state and national land is almost always free, though be advised that to operate your snowmobile in PA on property that is not your own, you must register the vehicle for $20 and possess liability insurance.

    Season

    • In State parks and forests, you may snowmobile from the day after antlerless deer season until April 1. Antlerless deer season end dates vary from early December to late January across the state depending on the area's Wildlife Management Unit. Check with the Pennsylvania Game Commission to see when antlerless deer season ends in your area before planning a ride in a state park or forest. State game lands are open to snowmobilers from January 15 to April 1.

    Allegheny National Forest

    • The sprawling, hardwood laden Allegheny National Forest covers over 800 square miles in northwest, Pennsylvania. Because it is a National Forest, there are no State Forest trails, but rather hundreds of miles of National Forest trail open to snowmobilers. The National Forest Service grooms approximately 230 miles of trail throughout the season. The area has earned the reputation of catering to snowmobilers and plays host to rides by the Pennsylvania Snowmobile Association and the Forest County Snowmobile Club annually. They also offer parking facilities for snowmobile trailers at the Kinzua Point Information Center, the Timberline Trailhead, the Longhouse Trailhead and the Rocky Gap Trailhead.

    Bald Eagle State Forest North

    • Bald Eagle State Forest has 474 miles of trail designated for snowmobile use in Union and Centre counties. Bald Eagle State Forest, District 7, had 290 miles of joint-use roads that snowmobilers share with vehicles from the gas and timber industries. Accordingly these will be plowed throughout the season, specifically: the southern extension of Sand Mountain Rd, Mountain Church Road, Kratzer Trail, Treaster Valley Road, and Spruce Run Road.

    Moshannon State Forest

    • Wedged between Clearfield and Elk counties, Moshannon State Forest grooms 168 miles of trail for snowmobilers. 178 miles of this is joint-use road that snowmobilers share with timbering trucks. To accommodate this industry, plowing may occur throughout the season on Horse Hollow, Colby Road, Dug Road, Moose Grade Road, Kelly Cellar Road, Underwood Road, Gordon Road, Benner Road, Firebreak Road, Hannah Furnace Road, Buskirk Road, Jury Mill Road, Shirks Road and Beaver Road.

    Armenia Mountain

    • Armenia Mountain boasts 175 miles of snowmobile trails within North Central Pennsylvania's Tioga State Forest. There are no gas or timbering activities in Tioga, so its 153 miles of joint use road are not plowed.
