Greenland, a division of the Kingdom of Denmark since the '50s, is the largest island in the world. Over half of Greenland is located within the Arctic Circle, and much of it is covered by an ice sheet, ice caps and glaciers. The breathtaking natural landscape attracts hikers and outdoor adventurers, including anglers, kayakers and paragliders. Its coastlines are covered by fjords, long narrow inlets of the sea with steep sides formed by glacial activity. Travelers to Greenland will see the spectacular Northern Lights, whales, seals, caribou and nature in its purest state.

    Ammassalik Fjord

    • Ammassalik Fjord in southeastern Greenland is a beautiful, wild landscape of water and rugged hills and coastal mountains. Home to the three small settlements of Kuummiut, Tasiilaq and Kulusuk where hunting and fishing are the main activities. Kuummiut, meaning people of the river, had almost 400 inhabitants in 2009. With almost 2000 inhabitants in 2009 , Tasiilaq is one of the largest towns in Greenland. Nearby Sermilik Station conducts research of the Mittivakkat Glacier. Kulusuk is the smallest settlement in Ammassalik Fjord, with spectacular views of the Denmark Strait's icebergs ad East Greenland's mountains.

    Uummannaq Fjord

    • Uummannaq Fjord in northwestern Greenland is surrounded by impressive mountains and home to sea life like whales, seabirds and seals. It's home to the town of Uummannaq as well, a hilly village full of colorful houses, with a church constructed of granite boulders and a museum. Glaciers are within walking distance, and views of icebergs, beaches and clear streams make a hiking or sightseeing trip well worth it.

    Tunulliarfik Fjord

    • Tunulliarfik Fjord in southern Greenland is filled with isolated settlements and sheep farms, icebergs, cliffs, mountains and little greenery. Colorful, fluorescent minerals, formed from ancient volcanic activity, are native to the Tunulliarfik Fjord. Ussingite, sodalite, chkalovite, tugtupite and polylithionite are all rare minerals found there. Many of Greenland's luminous minerals aren't found anywhere else in the world.

    Ilulissat Icefjord

    • Ilulissat Icefjord in western Greenland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its incredible number of icebergs and glacier activity makes it Greenland's most famous tourist destination. It is home to Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the most active glaciers in the world, splitting and shearing off large pieces (called "calving") that wash down to the sea through the fjord. The dramatic beauty of the arctic water and ice, and the sounds of the splitting glacier, make Ilulissat Icefjord an incredible destination.
