Moving is a stressful, tiring job, but employing safe moving practices can smooth out the process. It will take preparation, but having the reassurance that you've minimized the risk of injury should ease your stress. - Put heavy items in smaller boxes so they are easier to carry. Try and spread your heavy items out so they are not all in one box. Categorizing is essential, but when you have five boxes full of books, an injury is more likely to occur. Your boxes should not weigh more than 20 lbs. Wrap sharp objects in newspaper or unwanted fabric.
- The more people you have the quicker the move will be, the less tired everyone will be and the less likely someone will hurt their back. Have as much help as you think you will need.
- If the weather is supposed to be hot, start early in the day. If it gets too hot in the afternoon, wait until late evening when it gets cooler. Wear tennis shoes or boots, work gloves, hats to protect from the sun, and work clothes. Have a first aid kit handy, and provide sunscreen, food and water. Buy a furniture dolly at a home improvement store and show everyone how to use it.
- Everyone who is helping you should know to lift boxes by bending the knees, not the back. Pace yourself. If you feel you need a break, take a break. Do not stack heavy boxes on top of other boxes. Do not stack items high.
