Add beer when poaching fruit to enhance naturally existing flavors. Fruits such as the pear with sweet but simple characters do well in these recipes. Use beer in fruit shake recipes for a refreshing quality and added body. Strawberries, kiwis and other lighter fruits blend well with beers in shakes to work against overly watery results.

Darker beers in chocolate baked goods add a certain depth to the taste, while sweet breads gain a pleasant lightness from beer carbonation. Pie crusts benefit from the added presence of beer, although smaller amounts of a stronger beer are better in this case to avoid problems with proportions of liquids.
