How to Make a Boot Disk for XP Pro
- 1). Download a boot disk image. There are numerous reputable sites online that provide boot-disk images free of charge, including UltimateBootCD.com, BootDisk.com and Hiren.info. The boot disks will download in the ISO image-file format. Save the file to your C: drive.
- 2). Download and install Windows Server Resource Kit Tools from Microsoft. This package of utilities adds the ISO recording function necessary to burn the images to disk. Windows XP Pro does not have this functionality out of the box.
- 3). Insert the blank CD into the computer's burning drive. Make note of the drive letter.
- 4). Open the Windows Start menu and select "Run..." Type "cmd" and hit Enter to open the Command Prompt.
- 5). Type "cdburn.exe A: C:\bootCD.iso" (replace "A" with the letter of the CD burner, noted in Step 3; replace "bootCD.iso" with the actual name of the ISO image) and hit Enter. The CD burner will begin burning the disk. The Command Prompt will notify you when the burn is finished, by displaying text. You can then quit the utility and eject your newly burned boot disk.
