How to Wire an Electric Clothes Dryer

104 1
    • 1). Measure up from the floor 18 inches and mark the wall where the outlet will be installed. Cut a 2-square-inch hole on that mark with the sheetrock saw.

    • 2). Turn the main power off at the service panel. Unscrew each of the screws holding the service panel door in place and remove the door. Create a knockout hole in the top of the service panel with the screwdriver.

    • 3). Run the 12-3 cable down each wall, feeding one end out the hole for the outlet and the other end out the knockout hole in the panel. Pull 2 feet out into the panel and 6 inches out the outlet hole. Strip 12 inches of outer covering off on the panel end of the cable and 3 inches off the outlet end. Strip 1 inch of insulation off each insulated wire at both end of the cable. For additional help on running cable through or down walls see Resources.

    • 4). Run the wiring for the outlet through the hole in the outlet and out the front and slide the outlet up the wiring to the hole in the wall. Using the screwdriver and included screws in the kit, attach the outlet to the sheetrock wall.

    • 5). Connect the wiring to the outlet and tighten each screw down to hold them in place. Connect the red and black wires to the two brass screws, the bare wire to green-colored screw, and the white wire to the silver screw. Place the outlet cover over the outlet and attach it with the screws.

    • 6). Locate an open slot in the service panel to attach the 220-volt breaker. Snap the U-shaped clamps on the bottom of the breaker down onto the pins in the service panel to secure it in place. You will hear the clamps click as they lock in place.

    • 7). Connect the wiring to the breaker by screwing down each screw on the respected wire and tightening them in place. Connect the red and black wires to the two brass screws on the 220 breaker. Connect the bare wire to the ground strip in the panel, and the white wire to the neutral bus strip in the panel.

    • 8). Replace the service panel door and secure it to the panel with the same screws from Step 2. Turn the main power breaker and the new 220-volt breaker on. Plug in the dryer to the outlet and test for power and operation.
