You Break It, You Bought It For those of you purchasing a new appliance, it's common for you to wonder how to keep it looking and working as good as the day you bought it.
Who can blame you for wanting to get the most for your money? There is nothing worse than spending your hard-earned paycheck on an appliance that breaks because you weren't informed about how to properly maintain it.
However, when you buy a portable air conditioner, you won't have to worry about spending precious time reading a lengthy and tedious maintenance manual.
Since no permanent installation is required, portable air conditioners require the very minimum setup and maintenance.
The following information covers the basics on "how to maintain" your portable air conditioner.
Daily Maintenance As portable air conditioners cool the air, they also dehumidify it.
While most of the moisture taken out of the air is used to improve the cooling quality, some excess water collects in a container, which must be emptied regularly depending on the amount of humidity in the air.
Some portable air conditioner models have a drainage hose or pump feature allowing the excess water to be removed from the system as needed.
However, if you don't choose a portable A/C system with a drainage pump, it would be wise to select a unit with self-evaporating technology because it helps remove most of the excess water; therefore, the tank doesn't need to be emptied as often.
Biweekly Maintenance It is very important to keep your portable A/C's air filter clean.
Since air filters constantly work to purify the air and trap dust and other dirt particles, it should be removed and washed at least biweekly.
To clean the washable air filter, simply remove it from the air conditioner, place it in warm water, and cleanse it with a mild detergent.
The air filter should then be rinsed and set out to dry.
You should allow the filter to dry completely before placing it back into the portable air conditioner.
In addition, to increase the durability of the appliance, remember to wipe down the exterior regularly and clean the location where the unit is being housed.
To avoid discoloration of the unit exterior and to maintain a maximum cooling capacity, try to keep the unit from residing in direct sunlight.
Storage Suggestions After your portable air conditioner has saved you from the sweltering summer months, you will want to store it appropriately to ensure that it will be ready for the coming summer.
Before storing, you should follow these steps:
  • Turn off and unplug your portable air conditioner
  • Drain all water from the unit
  • Turn on the portable A/C in fan mode and allow the interior to dry completely
  • Clean the air filter (as previously mentioned)
  • Secure cords and hoses neatly
  • Store in a clean, dry area
If your portable air conditioner also duals as a heater, you will simply need to use the previously mentioned cleaning tips to preserve the life of your portable A/C unit.
Just remember to treat your portable air conditioner as you would like to be treated.
Keep your portable A/C dry and clean, and it will keep you cool and refreshed.
