Fabric Shower Curtain Guide

104 1

    With Liners

    • You do not have to use a liner with a fabric shower curtain. But a liner will keep the curtain from becoming soaked. Water causes the fabric to become moldy and mildewed over time. Using a plastic liner will lengthen the life of the fabric shower curtain. Because the fabric curtain will not need to be cleaned as often, it will hold up longer. Be advised, though: Plastic liners also become mildewed over time and need to be replaced.

    Hanging Options

    • You have several options for hanging your fabric shower curtain. If it has holes for hooks along the top, insert the hooks through the holes, and hang the curtain. If you are using a plastic liner, as well, put the fabric curtain on first and then the liner. Another option is curtain clips. These are alligator clamps attached to rings. The clamps attach to the fabric, and the rings slide onto the rod. Other curtains have pockets sewn into them for the rod to slide through.

    Cleaning

    • Using a shower curtain liner keeps water from constantly spraying against the fabric curtain. But the humidity in the bathroom can cause mold and mildew to grow on the fabric. Launder the shower curtains every two to three weeks to remove any mildew or mold. Use your regular laundry detergent and a color-safe bleach. Put the shower curtain in the dryer on a normal heat setting. Unless the curtain specifically instructs otherwise, use an iron to remove wrinkles.

    Other Options

    • When you cannot find the perfect shower curtain to match you bathroom decor, consider making one. For a bathtub shower, cut 4 1/3 yards of fabric into two equal pieces, each 78 inches long. Pin the two pieces together, and hem with a 1 inch seam allowance. Cut 10 evenly spaced buttonholes in the top edge of the curtain. For another option, purchase a sheet or tablecloth that matches the measurements of the curtain rod. Attach clip hooks to the fabric to hang it. A third option is using curtains. Feed the rod through the curtain rod pocket to hang them.
