Installing an OCZ Power Supply
- OCZ is an electronics manufacturer that produces computer power supplies. A computer power supply is the piece of hardware that is connected to an electrical outlet and converts power into voltages that the motherboard and other devices can use safely without overloading. Power supplies can burn out if over stressed. If fact, they're one of the most common hardware components to experience total failure, which makes the industry leading five-year warranty OCZ offers on some its power supplies especially valuable. Installing an OCZ power supply involves the same basic process as installing a power supply from another manufacturer. Before installing a new power supply, any existing power supply must first be removed. To remove an existing power supply, turn off the computer, open the case with a screwdriver, then unscrew the four mounting screws holding the power supply in position. Set the loose power supply on the ground, then trace each of the power cords and disconnect them from the computer's devices.
- To install the OCZ power supply, slide the power supply into the appropriate space, then slide it back toward the back of the case till it cannot move back any further. Many OCZ power supplies have an large internal case fan for extra cooling. Make sure this fan is pointing downward into the case. Next, use the mounting screws that came with the power supply to mount it in place. Save the old screws as replacements. Since power supplies can vary significantly in size and the amount of space available in computer towers vary, certain power supplies may not fit into some computers. It is a good idea to make some quick measurements of the power supply bay area, and compare them to the size dimensions of the OCZ power supply before you buy one.
- After the power supply is mounted all of the system devices must be reconnected using the bundle of cords which come out of the back of the power supply. If you are replacing an old power supply, it is wise to make a list of the cords you disconnect, so that you will remember to reconnect each one. The motherboard will always require a 20 or 24 pin power connector, and any hard drive or disk drive will require its own power cord. Some OCZ power supplies are modular, meaning some or all of the power cables can be plugged to the power supply as needed, rather than being permanently attached in a bundle. Once all devices are connected, the case should be closed and the computer can be started as normal. There is no need to install any software to go along with a new power supply.
