Are Hidden Cameras Effective?

103 1
When you think of security cameras, you probably have an image of the kind of cameras you see in retail stores or over the front door of some houses.
They are clearly cameras and because you know they are there, you are aware that your actions are being watched, if not by a live person then by a machine that is recording your every move.
These kinds of security cameras are often included in a comprehensive home security system and serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals.
Sometimes, these cameras don't even work, but because you don't know for sure, you are probably more careful than you would be otherwise.
There is, however, another kind of security camera that is not as obvious and serves an entirely different purpose.
These cameras are referred to as hidden surveillance cameras and are intended not as a deterrent but as a way to catch someone in the act of doing something criminal.
Hidden cameras are used in a variety of security situations, but usually are put into use when the property owner suspects a criminal act is being perpetrated.
For instance, a retail store owner might install a hidden camera over the cash drawer of a cashier that is suspected of stealing from the store.
You don't want to accuse her outright until you know for sure it is happening, so you need evidence, which the hidden camera can provide.
Some store owners might opt to place a visible security camera over the cashier instead in hopes that it will deter the behavior in the future, but others would rather gather evidence and fire that person because if he or she is stealing, there is no need to keep him or her on the payroll, even if the behavior stops.
Homeowners who have children often install a hidden camera in several rooms in their house if their kids are being watched by a babysitter or nanny when the parents can't be home.
Sometimes, they don't even suspect bad behavior on the behalf of the babysitter, but they install the cameras to protect their kids in the event that something does happen.
In these cases, it is critical that the babysitter not be aware that the cameras are in the rooms because if he or she is intent on doing the kids harm, it would be simple to go to an area where the cameras aren't located.
No matter what you need your hidden camera for, it can be a nice enhancement to your home security system, particularly if you suspect you are a victim of a criminal act, but you aren't able to prove it.
These cameras simply provide an extra layer of security, which is never bad.
