How to Organize a Closet With Wooden Shelves
- 1). Measure the width and depth of your closet so you know what size you will need to cut the wood for your shelves.
- 2). Measure the height of the items you will be storing in your closet to determine the amount of space you will need between your shelves.
- 3). Cut the plywood using a table saw or circular saw to form shelves sized to fit inside the closet. Cut the shelves the exact width and depth of your closet for a tight fit. If you have trouble inserting the shelves, or if your closet is not entirely square, trim the shelves an 1/8 inch at a time until you are satisfied with the fit.
- 4). Paint or stain the shelves and allow to dry.
- 5). Mark the wall on the inside of the closet to show where the brackets should be installed for the shelves to be at the proper height. Use a bracket as your guide and mark the location of each screw hole for each bracket.
- 6). Drill all of the screw holes that you have marked.
- 7). Screw the brackets in place and set your shelves on top of the brackets.
- 8). Place your items on the shelves taking care to place the most frequently used items at eye-level and toward the front of the shelves. Place less frequently used items on the top and bottom shelves or stored behind more frequently used items.
