103 14
If you do not have a drinking water filter system, you are allowing chemicals, toxic metals, bacterial cysts, bug spray, weed killer, prescription drugs and traces of hormones to enter your home, every time that you turn on a faucet.
All of those things have been found in public water-supplies around the country.
You know that it tastes bad, but there are things that you cannot taste or smell that can hurt you.
You add some lemon or other flavoring to improve the taste, but you still have to worry about your health.
Switching to bottled is no better.
The Environmental Protection Agency standards are the same for the bottling companies as they are for the treatment facilities.
A drinking water filter system is the only safe choice.
It saves money and it's better for the environment than all of those plastic bottles.
Sitting in plastic further contaminates the liquid.
Traces of chemicals used to manufacture the polymers seep in as it sits.
You need to take the time to find and purchase a high quality drinking water filter system for your home, particularly if you have kids.
All of the chemicals mentioned above are allowed in small levels to be present and still be considered safe.
But, scientists say that ingesting even tiny amounts of these contaminants over a matter of years will cause serious health problems.
Also, the toxicity is increased for those who weigh less.
A pitcher is the least expensive but also the least effective drinking water filter system.
If you cannot afford anything else, then it is better than nothing because it does remove chlorine and lead.
It's just not the best choice.
In the long run they end up costing more because the filtration cartridges have to be replaced so often.
A countertop drinking water filter system is very effective, costs less to use and filters faster than a pitcher.
There are differences in quality so you should review certified performance data before you buy.
The best drinking water filter system that I have found costs about a $100 but less than 10 cents per gallon.
The cartridges have a relatively long life span and they remove all of the contaminants mentioned in the first paragraph because they contain micron filters, activated carbon, multi-media blocks and ion exchange.
A countertop drinking water filter system that costs less is probably only removes chlorine, so you'd be better of with a pitcher.
The cheap systems usually leak and some are very difficult to install.
 So, don't waste your money.
Bigger under the sink units cost more and require the help of a plumber to install, as does a whole house drinking water filter system.
Depending on the needs of your family, you may want either one of those, because they can handle more use.
The countertop systems are right for most people, but don't forget about the shower.
Everything you put on your skin is absorbed through your pores and ends up in your bloodstream.
A drinking water filter system in the kitchen won't protect you in the bathroom.
