How to Decorate a Stairwell Ledge in a Mountain Home

    • 1). Drape a rustic, natural-looking garland along the stairwell ledge. Garlands are not just for use during the holidays. Find them in hobby and craft, discount as well as home design stores in all colors and styles. Utilize a garland on the ledge that includes outdoorsy items, such as twigs, pine cones, nuts or other items from nature. Use floral wire to attach the garland along the stairwell ledge.

    • 2). Place candle holders and color-coordinated candles along the ledge. Use candle holders made of wood, faux or real stone or in earth tones to match the other decor in your mountain home.

    • 3). Use painter's or masking tape to block out rectangle or square spaces on top of the ledge. Paint the space in between the tape pieces with earth tones or other colors that coordinate with your mountain home decor. Allow the paint to dry before removing the tape. You can also paint the entire ledge or make a wide stripe along the top surface by using the tape. This prevents clutter on top of the ledge, yet gives it a decorative appeal.

    • 4). Display a collection of antique tools, unusual large rocks from your property, figurines of mountain animals, horses or any other items you collect along the stairwell ledge. It is often difficult to see collections of this nature in a curio cabinet. The ledge keeps them out in the open for everyone to admire.
