    • 1). Decide on a mood for your room. If you want it relaxing, avoid a bold, bright or overwhelming color. If you want bold colors, avoid soft or subdued tones. Contrasting and opposing colors create a funky look.

    • 2). Pick out a piece for your room, based on colors and patterns, that will be the precursor to what you'll pick out for the rest of the room. Ideas for your piece can be a furniture set, a painting or, perhaps, some colorful or patterned curtains or drapes.

    • 3). Read magazines and walk around local crafts and decorating stores to get your thought process going. Take a notebook with you or a camera and take pictures. Cut out pictures from magazines, to. Write down ideas that appeal to you.

    • 4). Go to a crafts or painting shop and get color samples that match your starter piece. Grab two or three so you have a variety. Choose one that has at least one or two colors in it that precisely match one or two of the colors of your piece.

    • 5). Pick a color and shade on the lighter side of your swatch for your walls. The lighter shades add color accents that match your piece, but won't overwhelm a room as much as darker shades. If you like one of the darker shades, use it to paint an accent wall, instead of painting all of the walls.

    • 6). Take your swatch shopping with you for coordinating pieces in your room, basing your purchases on the other shades in your swatch. Try using a darker shade in your swatch. For other décor pieces, you can go dark and light, ensuring you stay within the color swatch's shades and colors.
