Indian Divorce Law
- According to India Divorce, the break up of a marriage using divorce in India is seen as a social taboo. Although divorce is allowed under Indian civil law it is not recognized by religions such as Hinduism, which is prevalent in India.
- India Divorcee reports divorce laws in India are governed by different rules for separate faiths. The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, covers marriages between people of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths. Christian marriages are covered by the India Divorce Act of 1869, while the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act sets out rules for the Parsi religion.
- The BBC reports that until new regulations were introduced in 2010, divorce was only possible in India when both parties involved in the marriage gave their consent to divorce. Alterations to the Hindu Marriage Act in 2010, allow the use of irreconcilable differences with only one spouse filing for divorce in India.
