    • 1). Choose the type of insect you want to use in your collection. You can focus on biting bugs, stinging bugs, predatory bugs or plant-eating bugs. You could also focus on specific families, such as scorpions, ants, flies or termites. Give your insect collection have a specific theme to follow.

    • 2). Capture live insects using a net and place each insect in its own individual jar. Beware of biting or stinging insects by wearing long-sleeved turtle-neck shirts, thick pants, thick gloves and a protective cap. Place each jar in the freezer to kill the insects without destroying its body. Buy a wooden display case for your insects. Pin the insects to the inside of the box and place small cards underneath each insect identifying the insect's common name, scientific name, habitat, food and any other interesting facts.

    • 3). Buy plastic insects from a toy store, hobby shop or from similar stores online. Plastic insects let you use insects you can't find in your local area. Divide the insects by their natural habitats such as cold weather areas, deserts and moderate areas. Glue them onto short pieces of two by fours and write information about your insects on index cards and use tacks to hold them in place.

    • 4). Look up pictures of your insects online and save them to a folder on your computer. Use image software, such as Microsoft Paintbrush, to add text descriptions of your insects underneath the picture. Print out your pictures and place them in a photo display book. Decorate the front of your photo display case with plastic insects to give it a fun look.
