Species of Orange Spiders

Marbled Orbweaver

• The marbled orbweaver, or Araneus marmoreus, ranges across the northern, eastern and central United States, Canada and Alaska. The females are larger than the males and tend to feature orange legs and bodies with other colors mottled on the body including yellow, brown and purple. As the name suggests, the markings look like marbling. They are commonly found in wooded areas and wait for their prey at the corners of their webs.
  
  

Orange Jewel Spider

• The orange jewel spider, also called a spiky spider, is a pea-sized creature with a broad, flat, crab-shaped body with spiky protrusions. Much of the underside is black with a few white or yellow speckles, but the top features dramatic orange coloring on the back and on the spikes. It ranges from California to North Carolina. Two basic variations exist: Gasteracantha cancriformis or Gasteracantha elipsoides.
  
  

Jumping Spiders

• Jumping spiders are typically 1 to 2 cm in body size and easily recognized by their hairy bodies and ability to leap as much as 50 times their body length. This may be related to higher blood pressure in their back legs. They are distributed world wide in over 500 variations and many feature orange markings somewhere on the black or gray body. The Habronattus features orange markings on its forelegs and underside, while the Phidippus adumbratus has orange and reddish markings on top.
  
  

Red Silver Spider

• The Argyrodes flavescens, or red silver spider, is a reddish orange arachnid with black legs and silvery spots, common in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Myanmar and Indonesia. It forages and steals its food from smaller spiders more often than it hunts for it, a rare strategy among spiders. The spiders have a bristle comb on the fourth legs which helps them pull up silk and wrap up prey.
  
  

Tarantulas

• Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders that live in warm or hot climates across the world, particularly in Central and South America, Africa and southeast Asia. Many feature orange as a primary or secondary color. The most well-known of these, the Usambara orange baboon tarantula, features several shades of orange and may be kept in captivity as a pet. They eat insects and burrow in dens.
