      Identify the Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope aurantia). The spider is distinguished by the black and yellow pattern on its back side (exoskeleton) and elongated oval shaped abdomen with bright yellow coloring. The Yellow Garden Spider has eight eyes, with four of them appearing to be conjoined in a row, while the others are in pairs.These spiders spin their webs vertically, and it can be identified by a zigzag stripe in the middle. A non-lethal species, the Yellow Garden spider is commonly found in gardens and tall weeds and on average is 50 cm long.

    • 2). Locate Grass Spiders (Agelenopsis). The species is identified by a top exoskeleton that is yellow to brown in color with dorsal markings. Glass Spiders are funnel weavers and produce a horizontal web with a tube shape on the side.They are very common in Pennsylvania, are fast moving and located in grass and weed areas. A female is generally ten to twenty millimeters long, while the male averages about 7 millimeters. A bite from the Grass Spider is harmless.

      Observe the Cross Orbweaver (Araneus diadematus). Cross Orbweavers are identified by a unique cross-like pattern on its back near its bottom. These patterns are brownish-yellow with white spots. Cross Orbweavers are most commonly found near buildings that have outdoor lighting fixtures. Females average size is thirteen millimeters while the male is around 9 millimeters long. You will spot them during the late summer and early autumn season.

    • 4). Identify the Hackled Mesh Weavers (Amaurobiidae). Hackled Mesh Weavers are identified by eight eyes paired in four rows. Its top color is rust to mahogany brown while its abdomen is gray. You can see their mesh style web in damp locations (under wood piles, stones, and bark). Their bite is non-lethal.

    • 5). Watch out for the Broad-Faced Sac Spider. Its bite is extremely painful due to its habit of eating other dead and decaying insects. If bitten, you may need medical attention. They have a tough exoskeleton in reddish brown color with puncture like marks. Its abdomen is usually pale yellow to gray in color. These types of spiders are attracted to warm and dry weather and can be found at the base of plants or under stones.

      Distinguish the Wolf Spider (Hogna) by its large size (average female is 28 millimeters long) and dark brown coloring. Hunting spiders, the Wolf Spider jumps and attacks its prey. The spider does not have a lethal bite.
