Identify your career goals. Are you seeking a job with more travel or more stability? Some career professionals seek a higher profile at work, a better title or more money. Some people crave a job which gives them better access to resources for research or an ability to publish their findings. Depending upon the type of career field you are in, your goals may be clear cut and obvious or more require more insight and deep thought.

Develop a career goal statement of one or two sentences describing what you hope to achieve in your job, taking all of your personal and professional reflections into account. This statement will provide you with a long-term career vision. This statement should also include specific time-frame points in which you aspire to achieve certain goals, like one-year, five-year or 10-year statements. By developing a long-term career vision with short- and long-term goals, you are providing yourself with a road map for career achievement.
