• Santa Ponsa's main historic claim to fame is its status as the landing site of Spain's King James I in 1229 when he came to Majorca to conquer it from the Moors, a Muslim people. After King James successfully seized the island, Santa Ponsa, along with the rest of Majorca, was considered part of the kingdom of Aragon and later the kingdom of Spain.

• Santa Ponsa attracts thousands of visitors annually with its abundance of natural beauty, outdoor sports and cultural activities. Along with its pristine beaches, Santa Ponsa is also situated in close proximity to Majorca's most visited hiking trail, Castell d'Alaro, with the trail starting at the ruins of a medieval castle in the town of Alaro. Many tourists are drawn to Santa Ponsa during the month of September, when the 10-day September Fiesta is held to commemorate the landing of King James I in the town.
  
  

Getting There

• Most visitors to Santa Ponsa reach the island town via the nearby Son Sant Joan International Airport in Palma. From the airport, a 20-minute taxi ride will transport you to Santa Ponsa. Some visitors to the area prefer to rent their own car, taking the Majorca 19 route westward toward Palma, and then the Ma-20 route to Santa Ponsa.

• Santa Ponsa is primarily a summer resort, with the majority of restaurants, bars and even many hotels closed from mid-October to mid-May annually. The coastal resort town boasts ideal weather conditions during the spring, summer and early fall months, with plenty of sunshine and rare rainfall. According to Santa Ponsa's official tourism website, local politicians are advocating for year-round tourism, though no official measures have been taken to keep businesses open during the winter.
